Estimating yardage

Every project needs a rough amount of fabric, and that fabric takes a predictable amount of yarn. This calculator starts from typical yardage figures for a standard worsted-weight project, then adjusts for the size you chose and the weight of yarn you plan to use.

Why yarn weight matters

Thinner yarns cover less area per yard, so a lace or fingering-weight version of a piece needs far more yardage than the same piece in bulky yarn. The calculator scales the base yardage up for fine yarns and down for heavy ones:

• Fingering and sport weights need the most yardage.
• DK and worsted sit in the middle (worsted is the baseline).
• Bulky and super bulky need the least yardage but the most skeins are heavier and shorter.

The math

• Total yards = base yardage × size factor × weight factor, plus your buffer
• Skeins to buy = total yards ÷ yards per skein, rounded up to a whole skein

For example, an adult-medium worsted sweater is around 1,100 yards; add a 10% buffer and divide by a 200-yard skein to get 7 skeins.
